Master of the High Court will no longer hear Debt Cases

February 2019

A recent practice direction from the President of The High Court has rid the Master of the power to preside over debt proceedings. The Direction provides that, from 4 February 2019, all Motions seeking liberty for Judgment shall now be heard by a High Court judge. The Master is believed to handle almost 200 debt cases per week and this direction is likely to significantly decrease his workload. Any motions issued before 4 February 2019 shall still go before the Master, in order to ensure a smooth transition. It is currently unclear whether the Master will send these Motions straight to the Judge’s list or if he will keep them in his list.
